Introduction

How To Become an Official

For the 2023-2024 Season, an official can fulfill their membership requirements directly through NGA with an NCSI Background Screening and the Abuse Prevention Course, as long as a judge has a current NAWGJ membership and recognized rating.

2023-2024 NGA Judge Rating Criteria

Local – This rating is grandfathered to a judge who is a current level 4/5 rated official OR has successfully passed the NGA judging exam (80%). A Local judge may judge NGA levels 1N-5N. A Local official may judge any sanctioned NGA meets with the exception of State Championships and above. A Local NGA rated judge should not be on a single panel in their first season.

State – This rating is grandfathered to a judge who is a current level 7/8 or 9 rated official. A current 7/8 judge may judge NGA levels 1N-8N. To judge NGA levels 9N/10N, a State judge must have their Local rating for at least one (1) year from the date of obtaining current rating OR from the date of completing the NGA judging exam. In addition, successful completion (80%) of the NGA 9N/10N exam is mandatory (available online for free and can be taken as many times as needed). A State official may judge any sanctioned NGA competition or NGA State Championships.

Regional – This rating is grandfathered to a judge who is a current level 10 rated official. A judge with this rating may judge any NGA level. An NGA State rating must be held for one (1) year from the date of obtaining NGA official’s membership to graduate to a Regional rating. A Regional official may judge any sanctioned NGA competition or Regional Championships (or below).

National  – This rating is grandfathered to a judge who is a current Nationally rated official. A judge with this rating may judge any NGA level. An NGA Regional rating must be held for consecutive four (4) years from the date of obtaining NGA official’s membership to graduate to a National rating. A National official may judge any sanctioned NGA competition or National Championships (or below).

International – This rating is grandfathered to a judge who is a current Brevet-rated official. A judge with this rating may judge any NGA level. An NGA National rating must be held for eight consecutive (8) years from the date of obtaining an NGA official’s membership to graduate to an International rating. An International official may judge any sanctioned NGA competition or International Championships (or below).

All officials with a State rating or higher must take and pass the online 9N/10N test each competitive season to maintain their rating to judge levels 9N/10N. This test is available online, free of charge.
